  15. <p>Nearly everybody wants a crack at Paul Bilzerian
  16. </p>
  17. <p>    Just when corporate raider Paul Bilzerian seems to have hit
  18. rock bottom, his fall from grace goes even farther. Last month
  19. Bilzerian, 39, was convicted by a Manhattan jury on nine counts
  20. of securities fraud, which carry a potential 45-year prison
  21. sentence and $2.25 million in fines. Then last week the
  22. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil lawsuit
  23. accusing him of illegal stock transactions involving seven
  24. companies, including his 1988 takeover of Singer. The charges
  25. range from lying to the SEC about how he financed his raids to
  26. trying to hide the number of shares he owned. In its suit, the
  27. SEC asks for repayment of more than $31 million in allegedly
  28. illegal profits. While denying the new charges, Bilzerian last
  29. week resigned as chairman of Singer, a post he had held for just
  30. 18 months.

  32. <p>    The SEC accuses four of Bilzerian's associates of helping
  33. him conceal his financial dealings. Three of them, including
  34. shopping-mall magnate Edward DeBartolo Sr. of Youngstown, Ohio,
  35. have already settled without admitting guilt.

  37. <p>    Bilzerian is leaving Singer, a defense contractor that
  38. manufactures weapons-control systems, in poor financial shape.
  39. To pay off more than $1 billion he borrowed to acquire the
  40. company, Bilzerian sold eight of the company's twelve divisions.
  41. A group of 9,000 retirees has filed a $235 million lawsuit
  42. against the company, accusing Bilzerian of plundering Singer's
  43. pension plan. The U.S. Government is suing the company for
  44. defense-contract fraud, seeking $231 million in damages.
  45. </p>
  46. <p>    None of that has slowed construction on Bilzerian's new
  47. eleven-bedroom, 21-bath house in an exclusive suburb north of
  48. Tampa. Expected to cost as much as $10 million, the
  49. 36,866-sq.-ft. home will include a basketball court complete
  50. with bleachers and electronic scoreboards.
